A patient referral occurs when a healthcare provider directs a patient to another provider or specialist for additional care. Conversely, downward referrals involve transferring patients to a lower-level facility for continued management or follow-up care. For example, a patient is referred from a clinic to get chest X-rays and sputum for Tuberculosis diagnosis, and after the diagnosis and commencement of treatment, the patient is discharged and referred to their nearest drug supply center to replenish medicines and for follow-up. Or, when a patient is referred to an emergency department for a bone fracture, after getting an X-ray and plaster cast, he can be referred to his nearest clinic to have the cast removed a few weeks later. This approach helps free up resources at higher-level centers and ensures that patients receive the appropriate level of care at different stages of their treatment.
Referrals and the Triage System
In emergency departments, the triage system assesses and prioritizes patients based on the severity of their condition.
