PNG Medical Blog Safeguard Policy

1. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that the PNG Medical Blog operates in a safe, ethical, and accountable manner, upholding the highest standards of child protection and safeguarding against sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment (PSEAH). This policy applies to all staff, contributors, volunteers, contractors, and partners associated with the PNG Medical Blog.

2. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • All employees, volunteers, and contractors of the PNG Medical Blog.
  • Guest writers, interviewees, and contributors.
  • Any third parties engaged in collaborative projects with the PNG Medical Blog.

It covers all online and offline interactions linked to the blog, including content creation, interviews, data collection, research, outreach activities, and social media engagement.

3. Guiding Principles

  • Zero Tolerance: The PNG Medical Blog maintains zero tolerance towards child abuse, sexual exploitation, harassment, or abuse of power.
  • Best Interests of the Child: In all circumstances, the welfare and safety of children are paramount.
  • Do No Harm: All activities must be designed and implemented in ways that prevent harm to vulnerable individuals and communities.
  • Accountability: All personnel are responsible for upholding this policy and will be held accountable for breaches.
  • Confidentiality: Reports and cases will be managed with strict confidentiality, ensuring protection for survivors and whistleblowers.

4. Child Protection Standards

  • Prohibition: All forms of abuse, neglect, exploitation, or discrimination against children are prohibited.
  • Content: Any use of children’s names, images, or stories in publications must be done with informed consent from parents/guardians and must protect the dignity, safety, and privacy of the child.
  • Safe Interactions: Direct engagement with children (e.g., interviews, case studies) must be supervised, respectful, and compliant with child protection standards.

5. PSEAH Standards

  • Prohibition of Exploitation: No staff or representative of the PNG Medical Blog shall engage in any form of sexual exploitation, abuse, or harassment.
  • Power Dynamics: Exploiting positions of power for sexual gain is strictly forbidden.
  • Sexual Activity with Minors: Sexual activity with persons under 18 years of age is strictly prohibited, regardless of local laws.
  • Transactions: Exchange of money, employment, services, or goods for sex is strictly prohibited.

8. Training and Awareness

  • All staff, contributors, and volunteers will receive orientation on Child Protection and PSEAH.
  • Regular refresher training will be provided to ensure compliance.
  • Safeguard principles will be integrated into the blog’s editorial and community engagement activities.

9. Monitoring and Compliance

  • Compliance with this policy will be reviewed annually.
  • All breaches will result in disciplinary action, which may include termination of engagement and referral to law enforcement.

10. Policy Review

This Safeguard Policy will be reviewed every two years or earlier if required by changes in legislation, standards, or organisational activities.
