Each year, an estimated 7·7 million deaths are associated with bacterial infections, 1·27 million of which are caused by bacterial pathogens resistant to the antibiotics available to treat them.

Rising antimicrobial resistance has been documented over the past two decades, and projections from high-income countries predict resistance to third line antibiotics—the last-resort drugs—could be 2·1 times higher in 2035 compared to 2005.

Despite a reduction in prevalence since 1990, anaemia remains a significant global health challenge. Substantial variation in anaemia burden exists by age, sex, and geography. Although anaemia burden dramatically decreases with socioeconomic development in general, the burden in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia is significantly worse than expected. Cause-specific burden estimates vary substantially by location, and can be used to design locally relevant health interventions aimed at improving anaemia management and prevention.

Despite tremendous advances in breast cancer research and treatment over the past three decades—leading to a more than 40% reduction in breast cancer mortality in some high-income countries—inequities remain, with many groups being systematically left behind, ignored, and even forgotten. This is a global blunder, argues a new Lancet Commission. In their report, authors set out recommendations to tackle the urgent challenges in breast cancer.
